GHS

Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals

Photo describing the value of the different areas of a standard GHS label

According to the decision of the European Parliament, as of December 1st 2010 the labelling of chemicals on packaging must be implemented in accordance with GHS Regulation EC No. 1272/2008. In order to print the required labels a printing system with at least two colours, red and black, is necessary. In addition, high durability and UV resistance is a requirement for the label material. A cost effective process that meets these requirements is thermal transfer printing on the appropriate plastic label material. Since standard commercial or industrial thermal transfer printers usually only support the use of a single ribbon (and as such one colour), new developments on the part of printer manufacturers was necessary. V & K has been intensively involved with this new two-colour thermal transfer printing since mid-2010.
